Founded in 1952, Smiths RFC was initially a closed club for Smiths employees only,
opening up for anyone to join in the mid seventies. Smiths RFC have always been
proud of being a family friendly club, with many generations going on to play for the
club.
The club at its prime were putting out 5 senior teams all playing at Newlands Park.
After a period of struggling in recent years, with the club only being able to put out
one senior team, Smiths RFC have really prospered this year. The reintroduction of
the 2nd Team (the Hamsters) has been a huge positive for the club and winning the
division along with the County cup and the Combination cup have fulfilled all
expectations of this exciting young team.
Originally founded as a social club, we now take our games very seriously with a
clear target for progression in the future; however, we keep a strong emphasis on the
fun and social side of the club off the pitch which has been the blueprint of our clubs
history, maintaining our ethos of rugby for all abilities.
‘I have been President of the club for 20 years and before that Chairman for 14 years
and can honestly say I have enjoyed every moment and have made friends for life
within the rugby fraternity.’ – Bob Ellis Club President
