Smiths beat weather and Bredon to end 2018 merrily on high
Smiths Rugby beat Bredon Star RFC 52-3 in a wet, windy away fixture.
Bredon were genial hosts and an early 2nd team fixture ended in a 22 all draw with mulled wine and port in abundance!
…
As for the 1st XVs, Smiths started into a strong wind and controlled the game through a dominant set piece and near perfect kicking from hand by fly half Will Pritchett throughout.
It wasn’t all easy going though. Bredon had strong runners and half backs able to bring them into the game. Smiths Number 8 Ben Hawker typified the defensive effort with some crunching hits contributing to a Man of the Match performance. When in position to attack, Smiths again played the conditions well and stretched the Bredon defence.
Having a decent lead and finishing the half on top meant Smiths were able to take plenty of confidence into the second period. With the wind keeping up but now at their backs the away team kept the pressure on to pick up another couple of quick scores.
Some injuries and a yellow card for Bredon hampered their attempts to get back into the game and Smiths spent most of the last quarter on the front foot. As the skies darkened further and the game drew to a close Smiths effort didn’t let up, finishing the match with a last try to hit the 50 point mark.
More committed in the tackle and savvy in attack, Smiths were also quicker to react when mistakes were made. It gives them a perfect send off into Christmas and able to look forward to a home fixture against the North on 5th January.
The players thank all club members and supporters for their supports and wish everyone a merry xmas and happy New Year!
